INDOFUNK
Indofunk
(Saraswati)
INDIANS in New York...Americans in New York...Austrians in New York...put them all in a pot, stir and serve hot..and there you have it, Indofunk, a heady broth of Indian classical and American funk/hip hop music, with a smattering of european avant-garde sensibilities. Indofunk is the brainchild of one Satish, a trumpeter with the roots in the South Indian city of Chennai. The band is like musical commune, with up to eleven members involved in the making of this album. the music is refreshingly new even if the concept isn't totally so - it is the sound textures that get to you first, built on sinuous mesmerizing bass drum (Western and Indian) grooves, layered lightly with keyboards and painted airily with the trumpet. Hard to describe, and yet very easy to assimilate - it's electric funk rising from a bed of exotic rhythms, harking at an ancient musical idiom and yet, very modern in it's overall structure. Listen to pieces like Mother Durga, Rain Dance, Indofunk, Eastern Spice, Saraswati Suite and Dance of the Asuras - the band is seldom predictable and at no time do Satish and his mates lose sight of what they are; they never get bogged down by traditional boundaries, always willing to step out of line with convention. You may had heard some of it before, you think, but this this one comes with the sting of exotic spice - tasty, breathtaking, with a lingering after effect ... and leaving you desiring more of the same.
